Unlike Pena Palace, Reichsburg Cochem (Imperial Cochem Castle) was a real castle, built on a hill overlooking the Moselle River sometime before 1130, and besieged by the German King Conrad III in 1151.

During the Nine Years War (1688–97) soldiers of the French King Louis XIV partially demolished the castle. In the 19th century it was rebuilt with a mix of Romanesque foundations & Victorian Gothic Revival style.
